Bordeaux grew rich on the wine trade, and the money went into stone: long quays, uniform classical façades and squares laid out in the 18th century. The historic centre along the crescent of the Garonne, known as the Port of the Moon, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Behind the grand riverfront the older city survives in narrow streets, medieval gates and a Gothic cathedral.

The free walking tour links both sides in about two hours. It takes in Saint-André Cathedral and the Pey-Berland Tower beside it, Rue Sainte-Catherine, one of the longest pedestrian shopping streets in Europe, and the medieval houses of the old quarter. It continues to Porte Cailhau and the church of Saint-Pierre, then Place de la Bourse with the Miroir d'Eau, and passes through Passage Sarget to the Monument aux Girondins on Place des Quinconces.

What to see in Bordeaux

Place de la Bourse and the Miroir d'Eau are the image of the city, best at dusk when the façades light up. The Cité du Vin is a museum about wine cultures of the world, with a tasting at the top included in the visit; tickets and hours are on the official Cité du Vin website.

The Grosse Cloche, a medieval belfry over a city gate, and Porte Cailhau are the best reminders of the walled town. For a view over the rooftops, climb the Pey-Berland Tower next to the cathedral.

Getting around and when to go

The centre is flat and largely pedestrian; trams do the rest. May, June and September are the most pleasant months, and September and October bring the grape harvest to the vineyards. High-speed trains reach Paris in about two hours, and San Sebastian is the next city south across the border. See the month-by-month guide for timing.

Good to know before you go

  • The Miroir d'Eau in front of Place de la Bourse alternates between a thin sheet of water and mist. It is switched off in the colder months, so check before planning photos around it.
  • The tram stops next to Place des Quinconces, where the Monument aux Girondins stands, and covers most of what lies outside the centre.
  • Wine tasting is not part of the tour. For vineyards, Saint-Émilion is a short train ride away, and the Cité du Vin museum is on the river north of the centre.
  • Try a canelé, the small caramelised pastry flavoured with rum and vanilla that every bakery in the city sells.
