Alfama & Fado Stories Free Tour
The oldest neighborhood in Lisbon, one alley at a time
Alfama survived the 1755 earthquake, and it shows: a Moorish maze of stairways, tiny squares and laundry strung between windows. This tour wanders from the cathedral up to the castle walls while your guide unpacks the neighborhood’s soundtrack — fado — and the lives of the fishwives, sailors and poets who created it.
The walk starts at Praça Luís de Camões (Largo Luís de Camões, Chiado, Lisbon) and runs daily at 10:30. It lasts around 2.5 hours, is offered in English, Portuguese, Spanish, and the group is capped at 25 people so the experience stays personal. Look for the guide with the green FreeTour sign.
